The builder hands you the keys, the final walkthrough is done, and your new home finally looks finished. Then you run a finger along a window sill or open a kitchen drawer and find a fine gray layer of construction dust. That is normal. Builders' crews usually do a quick "broom clean" before closing, but that is not the same as a home that is ready to live in.
If you are moving into a new build in Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs, Herriman, Lehi or anywhere else along the Wasatch Front, this guide explains what post-construction cleaning involves, why it takes longer than a normal clean, and how to plan it so move-in day goes smoothly.
Why new homes need a special kind of clean
Construction leaves behind more than you can see on day one. Drywall sanding creates very fine dust that floats through the house and settles on every flat surface, inside cabinets, in light fixtures and in the HVAC system. Painters and finish carpenters leave drips, overspray and caulk smears. New fixtures, appliances and windows come covered in protective film, stickers and adhesive residue.
A regular house cleaning is built around maintaining a home that is already clean. A post-construction clean is built around removing a layer of residue that has never been cleaned at all. It is slower, more detailed work, and it needs the right approach so new finishes are not scratched in the process.
What a thorough post-construction clean covers
Every home is different, but a proper new-build clean usually works top to bottom, room by room. At Maid For You Utah, our post-construction cleaning service focuses on:
- Full construction dust removal from ceilings and corners down to baseboards, door frames, window sills, light switches and vents.
- Sticker and adhesive removal from new fixtures, appliances, mirrors and glass, done carefully so finishes are not scratched.
- Window and glass polishing so new glass is clear of film, smudges and builder residue.
- Cabinet and drawer interiors wiped out, since sawdust and drywall dust settle inside before you ever load a dish.
- Floor, grout and tile scrubbing to lift the grime that builds up when crews walk in and out all day.
- Paint drip and sealant removal from hard surfaces where trades left small marks behind.

Timing: when to book your new-build clean
The best time for a post-construction clean is after all the trades are finished and before your furniture arrives. Once couches, beds and boxes are inside, dust hides behind and under them, and cleaning every surface becomes much harder.
A simple plan that works for most Utah new builds:
- Wait for the last trade. If the landscaper, blinds installer or cabinet hardware crew is still coming, ask whether they will be working inside. Fresh dust after a clean is frustrating.
- Book the clean for a day or two before move-in. That gives a buffer if the closing or the movers shift.
- Keep the HVAC in mind. Construction dust gets pulled into the system. Many homeowners ask their builder or an HVAC company about changing the furnace filter after construction so the same dust is not blown back out.
- Plan a light touch-up later. Fine dust keeps settling for a few weeks in a brand-new home. Some families book a deep clean or start recurring maid service a few weeks after move-in to catch what floats down.
Utah-specific things to watch for
Dry-climate dust. Utah's dry air means fine dust stays airborne longer and finds its way into every corner. Expect it on top of door frames, ceiling fan blades, window tracks and the tops of cabinets.
Hard water spots from day one. Much of the Wasatch Front has hard water, and spots can start forming on brand-new glass shower doors and fixtures quickly once you start using them. Getting into a habit early helps keep new glass looking new. Our guide to removing hard water stains in Utah homes covers simple daily habits.
Fast-growing neighborhoods. In active new-build areas like Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs, Herriman and Lehi, construction on neighboring lots can keep blowing dirt toward your home for months. Keeping doors and windows closed on windy days and adding a good entry mat helps more than you might think.
Can you do it yourself?
You can, and some homeowners do. If you go the DIY route, a few tips will save you time and protect your new finishes:
- Work top to bottom so dust falls onto areas you have not cleaned yet.
- Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter for drywall dust. A broom just moves fine dust into the air.
- Use microfiber cloths, and rinse them often. Drywall dust is gritty and can scratch if you keep wiping with a loaded cloth.
- Peel stickers slowly, and use a product made for adhesive removal rather than a scraper on new glass or stainless steel.
- Do not forget the insides of cabinets, drawers, closets, the laundry room and the garage entry.
The honest trade-off is time. A post-construction clean of a whole house is a long day of detailed work, often right when you are also trying to close, pack and move. That is why many new homeowners hand it off to a team.
Builders, remodels and renovations
Post-construction cleaning is not only for brand-new houses. Basement finishes, kitchen remodels and bathroom renovations create the same fine dust, often spread into rooms you are still living in. The same top-to-bottom approach applies, with extra attention to the rooms next to the work area.
If you are a builder, contractor or property manager handing over finished homes in Utah County or Salt Lake County, we also clean new builds before handover. Call or text to talk about your schedule.
What to have ready before the cleaners arrive
- Power and water turned on, and the lights working.
- A way into the home (lockbox code or someone on site).
- A heads-up on anything still unfinished, so we work around it.
- Any special surfaces or finishes you are unsure about, so we know what to treat gently.
