Moving day is chaotic, but there is a small window between getting the keys and carrying in the first box when a home is completely empty. That window is the best chance you will ever have to clean it properly. Once the couch, beds and boxes are in, the inside of cabinets, the floor under the fridge and the corners of every closet become hard to reach for months.

Even when the previous owners or tenants did a move-out clean, it is worth doing your own move-in clean. You do not know what products were used, how thorough they were, or what has settled since. This checklist walks you through it room by room, with a few things that matter specifically in Utah homes and apartments.

Before you start: a simple plan

  • Clean before you unpack. Ideally schedule the clean the day you get the keys, or the day before movers arrive.
  • Top to bottom. Dust ceiling fans, vents and shelves first, then counters, then floors last — so dust falls onto surfaces you have not cleaned yet.
  • Dry, then wet. Dust and vacuum before you wipe and mop, otherwise you just make mud.
  • One room at a time. Finish a room completely so you can start moving boxes into it.
  • Bring supplies with you: microfiber cloths, an extendable duster, a vacuum with a crevice tool, a mop, a non-scratch scrub pad, an all-purpose cleaner, a disinfectant for bathrooms, and a descaler or white vinegar for hard water.

Kitchen move-in cleaning checklist

The kitchen is where you store food and dishes, so it deserves the most attention.

  • Wipe the inside of every cabinet and drawer, including the top shelf and the shelf edges. Let them dry before lining or filling them.
  • Clean inside the refrigerator and freezer: pull out shelves and drawers, wash them, and wipe the gaskets around the door.
  • Clean inside the oven, racks and oven door glass. Check the drawer under the oven, which often collects crumbs.
  • Clean the microwave inside and out, plus the range hood and its filter.
  • Run the dishwasher empty on a hot cycle and wipe the door edges and filter area.
  • Scrub the sink and faucet and remove white mineral build-up around the base.
  • Wipe backsplash, countertops, switch plates and cabinet fronts — especially around handles.
  • If you can, gently slide the fridge and range out and clean the floor and walls behind them.

Bathroom move-in cleaning checklist

  • Disinfect the toilet completely, including the base, behind the tank and the hinges of the seat.
  • Scrub the tub or shower, grout lines and shower door tracks.
  • Remove hard water spots from shower glass, faucets and showerheads (see the Utah tips below).
  • Clean inside the vanity, drawers and medicine cabinet before you put toiletries away.
  • Wipe mirrors, light fixtures and the exhaust fan cover.
  • Mop the floor last, paying attention to the edges around the toilet.

Bedrooms, living areas and closets

  • Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures and the tops of door frames.
  • Wipe baseboards, doors, door handles and light switches.
  • Clean window sills and window tracks, and dust or wipe blinds.
  • Vacuum and wipe closet shelves and closet floors before you hang anything.
  • Vacuum air vents and return grilles — they collect a surprising amount of dust while a home sits empty.
  • Vacuum carpets slowly in two directions, and mop hard floors last.

Utah-specific tips most checklists miss

Hard water build-up

Much of Utah has hard water, which leaves chalky white deposits on faucets, showerheads, shower glass and around sink drains. Regular all-purpose cleaner will not remove it. Use a descaler made for mineral deposits, or white vinegar on a cloth left on the spot for a few minutes, then rinse well. Avoid harsh abrasives on chrome, glass and natural stone, which scratch easily. A showerhead can be soaked in a bag of vinegar to clear clogged nozzles.

New builds: construction dust is everywhere

If you are moving into a newly built home in fast-growing areas like Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs or Lehi, expect fine drywall dust on every ledge, inside cabinets, in window tracks and inside vents — plus paint specks and sticker residue. This kind of dust keeps coming back if you only wipe the obvious surfaces, so it usually needs a dedicated post-construction clean before a normal move-in clean.

Fall and winter moves

Moving between October and March in Utah often means snow, mud and road salt being tracked in for days. Put down entry mats and floor protection before movers arrive, clean the entryway and stairs last, and plan a quick second floor clean once the moving is done.

Basements and storage rooms

Many Utah homes have basements or large storage rooms that sit unused between owners. Vacuum corners and window wells you can reach, check for cobwebs around the furnace and water heater area (do not move or cover equipment), and wipe shelves before storing boxes.

Renting an apartment? Document first

If you are moving into a rental in Salt Lake City, Provo or anywhere else, take dated photos and video of every room before you clean. Note anything that was dirty or damaged on your move-in inspection form. That record protects your deposit when you move out later. Our apartment cleaning page covers what a professional clean includes for rentals.

When it makes sense to hire a move-in clean

A thorough move-in clean of a full house can take a whole day or more for one person — time you probably want to spend packing, unpacking or handling utilities and school paperwork. Hiring professionals makes the most sense when:

  • You are moving in on a tight timeline and the home needs to be ready the same day.
  • The home is large, or has been empty or neglected for a while.
  • It is a new build with construction dust.
  • Someone in your household is sensitive to dust or harsh cleaning products.

Move-In Cleaning FAQ

Common questions about move-in cleaning

The cleaning tasks are very similar — an empty home cleaned top to bottom, including inside cabinets and appliances. The difference is the goal: a move-out clean is done to hand the home back (often to get a deposit back or prepare for a sale), while a move-in clean makes sure the home is clean and sanitized for you before you unpack.
Schedule it after you get the keys and before your furniture and boxes arrive, while the home is empty. If the previous occupants are still finishing their move-out, book your clean for after they leave so nothing gets dirty again.
Use a descaler made for mineral deposits or white vinegar. Let it sit on the spot for a few minutes, wipe with a non-scratch pad, then rinse with clean water and dry. Avoid harsh abrasives on chrome, glass and natural stone. Heavy build-up is included in our deep cleaning service.
